Origins and Vision

  • Prior to India’s 1991 economic liberalisation, Non-Resident Indian (NRIs) had limited avenues to invest in India.
  • Late Srichand P. Hinduja, then the chairman of Hinduja Group along with his brothers late Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok, envisioned a platform enabling NRIs to contribute to India’s growth.
  • This led to the creation of IndusInd International Holdings Ltd. (IIHL) in Mauritius, designed to mobilize NRI capital and expertise.

Pioneering NRI-Backed Banking

  • The Hinduja brothers proposed a private bank capitalised by NRIs, advocating the idea to several leaders, cutting across the political spectrum bring about a consensus towards participation of the private sector in the banking sector that was closed for private sector investment since the nationalisation of all banks in 1969.
  • This adroit move led the RBI to grant 10 banking licenses to ICICI, HDFC, IDBI, UTI, Global Trust, Times Bank, Bank of Punjab, Development Credit Bank, Centurion Bank, and IndusInd Bank.
  • Incidentally, apart from the 4 Institution-led Banks, only IndusInd Bank, the only non-institution-promoted bank from that era still remains active.
  • IIHL mobilized USD 36 million to invest in IndusInd Bank and IndusInd Enterprise & Finance Ltd (IEFL), becoming one of the earliest large-scale NRI-backed financial initiatives in India.
  • Concurrently. the idea generated extraordinary support, with over 5,000 people attending a landmark event at Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai and helping build a nationwide base of 40,000 shareholders.

Launch and Early Success

  • IndusInd Bank began operations on 12th April 1994, just 67 days after a verbal go-ahead and 10 days post-RBI license.
  • Initial capital: INR 100 crore (51% by IIHL, 49% by IEFL).
  • Strong shareholder support led to oversubscription; net profit in the first year: INR 21.83 crore.
  • Successfully navigated challenges including the Asian financial crisis, currency depreciation, and rising interest rates.
